Development of innovative SF6-free GIS

SZM is supporting Nuventura in the development of a new type of gas insulated switchgear that replaces the greenhouse gas SF6 with dry air.

The Berlin start-up Nuventura GmbH and the switchgear specialist SZM (SchaltanlagenZubehör Bad Muskau) are working closely together on the development of a new type of gas insulated switchgear (GIS). The aim is to develop the next generation of GIS, whose switch will operate in dry-air, an environmentally-friendly alternative insulating medium to SF6 (sulphur hexafluoride).

With Nuventura being responsible for the design and SZM helping with the assembly, the aim is to develop a new GIS, that is SF6-free, while not only keeping, but improving on all the benefits of traditional SF6-based GIS. The GIS will cover the full medium voltage (MV) range up to 36 kV, and completely replace the commonly used SF6-using MV GIS.

SF6 is valued for its excellent dielectric properties, but it is 23,500 times worse than CO2 in terms of its global warming effect. Experts say that its annual emissions are comparable to the yearly CO2 emissions produced by approximately 100 M cars.
In this cooperation, Nuventura will contribute with its knowledge of GIS and will rely on SZM's decades of experience in the field of circuit breaker development. This new type of GIS is to be jointly developed and type-tested, and a first marketable prototype is to be built at the factory of SZM in Bad Muskau. After the type-tests have been completed, the construction of a pilot series is planned.
