Retrofit extends the operation of the switchgear

In a new retrofit project, an American switch truck needs to be adapted. This proves to be a particular challenge.

We currently have a truly international guest in our facilities. The generator circuit breaker (GCB) was built in New York, USA, the circuit breaker used in it comes from Regensburg, Germany, and both have been in operation together in Saudi Arabia for many years.

Now, our task is to adapt the switchgear (13.8kV/4500A/63kA) as part of a retrofit project and equip it with a new circuit breaker. The difficulty lies in the dimensions in inches. Purchasing parts with such dimensions can hardly be purchased in Europe, a real challenge for our procurement department! Furthermore, the massive switch truck weighing 1,500 kg must withstand high short-circuit currents, placing great demands on its mechanical stability. Moreover, an unknown contact system was used, which we will have to replace with our own SZM solution.

SZM is now one of the world's leading manufacturers of switchgear retrofitting in low and medium voltage. With over 300 modernization solutions for upgrading aging installations, look for the best solution for the customer in terms of technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness irrespective of the make to retrofit our customer's switchgear and thus extend its service life. As specialists in switchgear, we have delivered many thousands of retrofit switch trucks worldwide as part of retrofit projects.
